PEN America, a nonprofit organization that works to defend free expression, has named Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jennifer Egan its president, succeeding Andrew Solomon.

Egan will work in partnership with PEN America CEO Suzanne Nossel. A PEN America Trustee since 2013, Egan is the author of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit From the Goon Squad. He is also the author of the 2017 novel, Manhattan Beach.

PEN America has also concluded a consolidation with the former West Coast-based PEN Center USA after a unification vote. PEN America has a membership of more than 7,000, which includes writers, journalists, screenwriters, translators, editors, agents, and writing related professionals.
