2019 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award Winners Named

The Cleveland Foundation has named the winners of its 84th Annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards. The 2019 recipients of the awards, which are the only national juried American book prizes focusing explicitly on works that address racism and diversity, are:

  • Nonfiction: Andrew Delbanco for The War Before the War: Fugitive Slaves and the Struggle for America’s Soul from the Revolution to the Civil War (Penguin)
  • Fiction: Tommy Orange forThere There (Knopf)
  • Tracy K. Smith for  Wade in the Water (Graywolf)
  • Sonia Sanchez, lifetime achievement award.

Past winners of the award include five writers who later won Nobel prizes: Gunnar Myrdal, Nadine Gordimer, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Toni Morrison, and Wole Soyinka.
