NBF Awards $10K Prize to WePAC

The National Book Foundation (NBF) selected the West Philadelphia Alliance for Children (WePAC) as the winner of the 2019 Innovations in Reading Prize. Awarded annually, the prize is valued at $10,000 and recognizes "an individual or organization that has developed an innovative project that creates and sustains a lifelong love of reading," according to a press release. WePac, which serves more than 5,00 students, works to mobilize volunteers to reopen and staff libraries in Philadelphia following widespread school library closures in 2004.

Additionally, this year's Innovations in Reading Prize includes two honorable mentions: Oakland International High School and Word Up Community Bookshop. Each organization will be awarded $1,500.
