Boom! To Publish R.L. Stine’s ‘Horror at Happy Landings’ Graphic Novel

Indie graphic novel house Boom! Studios and its KaBoom! Imprint announced plans to publish Just Beyond: The Horror at Happy Landings by horror master R.L. Stine and artists Kelly & Nichole Matthews, the second original graphic novel in Stine’s new series of middle grade horror comics.

Stine’s Just Beyond: The Horror at Happy Landings will be released in May 2020.

The new graphic novel follows the Walden Family on a trip to the camping grounds of the Happy Landings forest preserve where the family encounters a couple of body-snatching aliens. It gets even stranger. After a weird bird attacks their mom, brother and sister Parker and Annie confront the aliens, who enter their bodies and take control of their brains. Will the creatures take over their lives? So much for the Walden’s serene camping trip!

Bestselling horror author R.L. Stine is best known for his Goosebumps series and the TV and movie series based on many of his popular works.

Stine said he’s “not an outdoors person. When I'm in the woods or out in the country, I think of all the creatures who live there, and I instantly begin to think of horrifying encounters. What if you were camping out--and you were invaded by creatures from another planet?”

This is the second book in Stine’s Just Beyond series of original middle grade horror/supernatural graphic novels, a series launched after he signed a multi-book agreement with Boom! last year. The series is Stine’s first time creating book length comics works. The first book, Just Beyond: The Scare School, was announced earlier and will be released in September 2019.

Happy Landings is not a sequel. Each book in Stine’s Just Beyond series is a standalone graphic novel. Boom! is looking to replicate the success it had in the YA graphic novel category with the popular Lumberjanes teen series, noting the lack of middle graphic horror graphic novels. A Boom! Studios spokesperson said the house has more than 250,000 orders for The Scare School.=
