Indigo Rehires More than 500 Managers

Indigo Books and Music, Canada's dominant bookstore chain, is rehiring 545 workers; it had laid off 5,200 employees last month. The rehires cover management and salaried staff and the decision was made possible by a subsidy from the Canadian government, which is covering up to 75% of salaries for some employees through a Covid-19 relief program. Indigo, which closed its 199 stores on March 18, said it has seen a significant spike in online sales, though overall sales for the year are down.
