Boom! Inks First Look Deal with Netflix

Independent comics and graphic novel publisher Boom! Studios has reached a first-look deal with streaming media service Netflix to develop live action and animated series based on Boom! properties.

BOOM! Studios CEO and founder Ross Richie and Boom! president of development Stephen Christy will take the roles of executive producer for all shows developed through the agreement.

Richie said that Boom! creates more than 20 new original comics series each year. “BOOM!’s unique partnership model of controlling the media rights to our library benefits creators by positioning them to be packaged with high-end directors, screenwriters, and producers,” he said.

This new agreement between Boom! and Netflix is actually the latest partnership between the two firms. It follows their collaboration on the forthcoming feature film Unsound, which has been directed by David F. Sandberg and is based on the graphic novel by Cullen Bunn and Jack T. Cole.  Boom! is the publisher of such acclaimed graphic franchise works as Lumberjanes, Something is Killing the Children, Once & Future, and Mouse Guard.

Netflix v-p, original series Brian Wright said,  “BOOM! characters are innately special, they’re colorful, diverse and varied and their stories have the power to ignite something in all of us. We can’t wait to bring these stories from the page to the screen to fans in every corner of the world.”
