LB Buys 'Gatsby' Prequel

Joshua Kendall, v-p, editorial director, and executive editor at Little, Brown, acquired North American rights to Nick, a novel about The Great Gatsby narrator Nick Carraway. LB is calling Nick a prequel to The Great Gatsby, which has sold 25 million copies worldwide and whose U.S. copyright expires at the end of 2020.

Trident Media Group’s Ellen Levine represented novelist Michael Farris Smith in the deal. Set for release on Jan. 5, 2021, Nick follows Carraway before he meets Jay Gatsby, and “breathes new life into a character that many know but few have pondered deeply.” Kendall added that the novel is the story of a “broken and conflicted observer, and in many ways it’s the story of all of us, waylaid and in search of love and meaning.”
