
First Duende-Word BIPOC Bookseller Award Winners Announced
The first three winners of the Duende-WordBIPOC Bookseller Award have been announced. They were given for activism, innovation and leadership and come with a $700 prize. The awards, a collaboration between the Duende District Bookstore and The Word, a literary arts organization, were announced during the ongoing margins.conference over the weekend.
The winners are:
- Activism Award: Serena Morales, bookseller at Books Are Magic in Brooklyn, N.Y., won the Activisism Award.
- Innovation Award: Rosaura "Chawa" Magaña, co-owner of Palabras Bilingual Bookstore in Phoenix, Ariz.
- Leadership Award: Hannah Oliver Depp, founder of Loyalty Bookstores in Washington, D.C.
- Aida Lilly of The Word and Kathy Burnett, owner of Brain Lair Books in South Bend, Ind., were the judges.
