Waterstones Workers Petition for Help for Furloughed Colleagues

Current and former staff at U.K. bookstore chain Waterstone's have launched a petition asking COO Kate Skipper and CEO James Daunt to ask Elliott Advisors, the hedge fund that owns the bookstore chain, as well as Barnes & Noble, to raise pay for furloughed booksellers.

The petition was started after it was revealed that Elliott paid its own staff of 107 people £93.3 million in bonuses in 2019, reports The Bookseller.

The petition notes that while the U.K. government pays up to 80% of a furloughed workers wages, that still puts most booksellers at risk of falling below the poverty line. The petition then asks the bookstore chain to offer additional subsidies to help workers who are at financial risk.

More than 650 people have signed so far.
