AG Slams McGraw-Hill in Letter, Circulates Petition

The Authors Guild has published a letter it sent to McGraw-Hill CEO Simon Allen and general counsel David Stafford demanding that the company immediately end its practice of charging freelance contractors a 2.2% fee—which the educational publisher calls a "small supplier fee"—for processing their invoices. "Imposing a 2.2% fee for processing invoices—a normal cost of doing business—is tantamount to wage theft," the AG said in its statement. "What’s more, McGraw-Hill unilaterally imposed this fee during a pandemic, when freelance creators are losing work opportunities and unable to access the full scope of unemployment benefits due to their independent contractor status." The Guild is also circulating a petition asking others to demand the company end the practice.
