Owners of Rainy Day Books Want to Sell

An era is ending for a literary icon: Rainy Day Books, in the Kansas City, Mo., suburb of Fairway, Kans., is up for sale. In the store’s May 2 newsletter, Vivien Jennings, who founded Rainy Day Books in 1975, and co-owner Roger Doeren announced their plans to retire. Citing the recent births of a grandchild and a great grandchild, Jennings and Doeren expressed their desire “to return to where it all began: reading to babies.” Interested parties may direct inquiries to Geoffrey Jennings at Geoffrey@RainyDAyBooks.com. Pre-pandemic, Rainy Day Books hosted 300+ author events each year, and was renowned for organizing splashy events in collaboration with local organizations that were held in large venues around Kansas City that featured prominent authors and drew huge audiences.
