Alice James Launches Series for Mid-Career Women Poets

Alice James Books has announced the launch of the Jean Valentine series, a new series that will publish books by mid-career women poets, who will also receive a cash prize.

Named in honor of the poet Jean Valentine, who died in 2020, the series will kick off with 'Veer' by Cole Swensen, slated for May 2026.

“The Jean Valentine Series from Alice James Books is a tribute to a beloved poet. Jean Valentine was a wholly original and distinctive voice in American poetry from the 1960s until her death in 2020," said Anne Marie Macari, president of the Alice James Books board of directors, in a statement. "This award in her name honors poets in mid to late career who, like Valentine, take risks in form and content, poets who surprise and move us. Cole Swensen is such a poet."
