Sophie Castille Awards Expand in Second Year

The second annual 2024 Sophie Castille Award in English, presented in partnership with Comica and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, will be awarded at the festival’s annual event in Bowness-on-Windermere this September 28–29. Since its English-language launch last year, when Michele Hutchison was named the inaugural winner for her translation of The Philosopher, the Dog, and the Wedding by Barbara Stok (SelfMadeHero), a number of other countries have launched their own iterations, including Italy, with Napoli Comicon; Poland, with the Lodz Comics Festival; and Slovenia, in partnership with Tinta Festival Slovenia.

The Sophie Castille Awards for Comics in Translation recognize the best translation of graphic novels into a variety of languages around the world. They were launched in honor of Sophie Castille, international rights director and v-p of licensing for Mediatoon and cofounder and director of Europe Comics, who died unexpectedly in 2022.
