Black List Unveils Inaugural Book-to-Screen Adaptation Survey

The Black List has unveiled its inaugural book-to-screen adaptation list, based on a survey of 84 editors and literary agents.

Editors and agents were asked to name 10 titles published since 2005, the year of the Black List's launch, whose acquisition or sale they were not involved in but that they most wanted to see adapted into film or television. The 61 novels make up the final list are those that were mentioned by multiple respondents.

The Black List is an annual survey of Hollywood's best unproduced screenplays and web platform focused on screenplay development and discovery for writers and producers. This fall, it made its first foray into fiction and began accepting novel manuscripts in addition to screenplays.

The titles on the inaugural adaptation list include:

  • All Fours by Miranda July
  • All the Sinners Bleed by S.A. Cosby
  • Chain Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
  • James by Percival Everett
  • Luster by Raven Leilani
  • Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
  • Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld
  • Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
  • Trust by Hernan Diaz
  • A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
