Kindle to Offer Downloads for DRM-Free Titles

Beginning Jan. 20, 2026, new books published in the Amazon Kindle store without digital rights management (DRM) will be available for readers to download in EPUB or PDF format, per a company announcement.

Previously published titles without DRM can also opt-in to the feature, which Amazon said intends to make Kindle books available across a “wider range of devices and applications.” Existing titles with DRM must change their status to opt-in to the program.

The announcement comes amid ongoing conversations about the inefficiencies of e-book sales and lending, which some attribute to the DRM system.
