Obit: David Hartwell

Longtime Tor Books editor David Hartwell died on Wednesday, January 20. He was 74. Hartwell's career as editor included positions at Signet, Berkley/Putnam, and Pocket Books/Simon Schuster, where he ran the Timescape Books imprint. In 1984, after already becoming a well-known science fiction editor, Hartwell joined Tor Books, where he served as senior editor up until his death.

Tom Doherty, founder of Tor Books, shared a tribute to Hartwell, whom he called a "brilliant editor." Read the message in its entirety here. A private funeral service for family is being held in Massachusetts, and Tor is planning a memorial for Hartwell in New York City, with additional details forthcoming.
