R.I. Governor Vetoes 'Revenge Porn' Bill After Pressure from Media Groups

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo vetoed a bill that would have limited the First Amendment rights of the media, after being petitioned by groups including the American Booksellers for Free Expression. The groups had written the governor asking her to veto the legislation, fearing that the bill was so broadly worded that it could make criminals of people involved in neither revenge nor porn, and would have a direct impact on the media. Groups including the Rhode Island Press Association, the Media Coalition, the New England First Amendment Coalition, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island all applauded the veto.
