Among the other summer books that Steinberg talked enthusiastically about in the course of the taping was Charles Frazier's debut novel, Cold Mountain, but that part was cut out of the show for length. The Atlantic Monthly title is off to a strong start anyway, due in large part to a carefully executed pre-pub campaign that aimed to make this book (yes, another PW starred review) a favorite summer handsell. The publisher's initial focus was to get booksellers and key industry people to read the book; thus, more than 1000 advance galleys were sent to booksellers and people in the book business -- including sales reps at other houses -- to get the drums rolling. Early on, Vintage purchased reprint rights for $300,000 and greatly assisted in fanning the word of mouth. AM associate publisher Eric Price noted that the house set up dinners with booksellers across the country to discuss forthcoming books and highlighted Cold Mountain. Frazier is currently finishing off a 12-city tour, mostly in the Southeast, but since he's drawing large crowds and outstanding sales the tour will be expanded nationally at the end of August. A first printing of 25,000 copies was quickly sold out and the press has gone back for six printings totaling 80,000 copies.
