Flying High on Earth
Daisy Maryles, with Lynn Garrett -- 9/15/97
Alice Hoffman's 12th novel, Here on Earth, makes it onto PW's fiction list in its first week on sale and before the author even began a rare (for her) national reading tour. Putnam launched the book with an initial shipment of 75,000 copies. While the book got some mixed reviews (thumbs down from PW and NYT), it also got a front-page rave in the Washington Post Book World, while Entertainment Today's review began, "Oprah Winfrey, have I got a book for you..." Hoffman will make appearances in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and New York City. Her hometown reading will be with Wordsworth Books in Cambridge's Brattle Theater, where she will be with another Putnam author, Lee Smith, on September 22. Hoffman will also be taking part in lots of online chats, including AOL's The Book Report, Amazon.com and B&N.com.
