Elsewhere on the Web
Calvin Reid -- 9/22/97
C-Span, the public service cable network, has launched the Booknotes Cyber-Companion (http://www.cspan.org), the online supplement to its About Books and Booknotes programs. Among many other features, the site provides complete transcripts of all of Brian Lamb's eight years of author interviews and a page of book industry statistics. There's also a tasteful promotion for Lamb's own recently published book BookNotes.....
It's the human need to communicate that has spurred the Web's incredible development. Now Manning Publications has published Coffeehouse: Writings from the Web edited by Levi Asher and Christian Crumlish, an anthology of the quirky writing that continues to proliferate on the Web despite corporate encroachment. The book collects the work of some notable Web personalities (like Xander Melish and John Labovitz) and includes artwork, p try, personal histories and more. It's located at http://www.coffehousebook.com.

If you like pop sociology then Nancyfriday.com is the site for you. The bestselling author of My Mother/Myself and The Power of Beauty includes excerpts from her many books and a short biography and slips in a timely tribute to Princess Di. There are polls (What's the most romantic place to eat?), discussion groups (What were you told would happen if you masturbated?) and more. Nice design and the pages load in a hurry.... Easily one of the handiest sites on the Web,

Whatis.com is a useful, no frills, everything-you-need-to-know technical and language glossary about computing and the Internet that's great for editors, librarians, teachers and students. The site offers quick information on everything from how the Internet works to a complete guide to writing html.
