The Angel Angle
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 10/6/97
Not only is Caleb Carr's The Angel of Darkness marking its third week among the top five titles on our hardcover fiction list, but it's racking up comparable placings on bestseller charts nationwide. The sequel to Carr's megaselling The Alienist, which spent a total of 51 weeks on our charts, was published by Random House on September 15 with a 300,000-copy first printing. A second printing was needed just two days later, bringing the in-print total to 350,000. Carr kicked off a nine-city promotional junket last week with a "Darkness at Twilight Walking Tour" of downtown New York City, sponsored by Barnes &Noble. He pointed out many of the sites from both novels to more than 150 attendees; a reading afterwards at the Union Square B&N drew 600 fans. RH's major publicity efforts have included author appearances on The Charlie Rose Show and NPR's All Things Considered, along with print interviews in PW (Sept. 15), USA Today and Entertainment Weekly.
