Pachyderms to Pooches
Daisy Maryles -- 10/13/97
Jeffrey Mussaieff Masson is going to the dogs -- on, as it's turning out, another bestselling voyage. Following the critical and sales success of When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals -- which spent four weeks on PW's charts -- the author now zer s in on the canine kingdom with Dogs Never Lie About Love: Reflections on the Emotional World of Dogs. Published on September 10, the Crown title is now in its fifth printing, with an in-print total of 125,000 copies. In his latest work, Masson answers questions from the seemingly simple (Why do dogs bark?) to the complex (Do some dogs commit suicide from despair?) as he examines canine behavior through the observations and experiences of his own three dogs. The good word's spreading throughout the canine world: Masson is in the midst of an 11-city tour, and one of his bookstore visits (Atlanta's Chapter 11) drew 12 pooches. The author was the subject of a Dateline NBC segment earlier this month; other media stops have included an MSNBC appearance. Oprah, too, has mentioned the new book; during a September on-air visit to a bookstore, she picked up Masson's latest and indicated that she was eager to read it. Now how can that hurt future sales?
