Fear of High Floors
Judy Quinn -- 11/24/97
HarperCollins senior editor Robert Jones's $450,000 floor for As Nature Made Him, Rolling Stone journalist John Colapinto's true tale of identical-twin sexual identity gone awry, effectively held off other possible bidders for the book. Jones, who negotiated the deal with ICM agent Lisa Bankoff, plans a 1999 publication for the book. And Pocket's $300,000 floor to acquire Wither, a Scream-meets-The Craft horror first novel by screenwriters J Gangemi and John Passerella -- which already has a film deal that could be worth up to $1 million with Columbia/Manifest Films -- also became the winning bid. Negotiating with agent Gail Hochman, Pocket senior editor Gary Goldstein bought world rights to this and to a planned second book by this team. A spring 1999 publication, possibly to be tied in to a film release, is planned.
