Nonfiction Wins the Holiday Race
Daisy Maryles -- 1/5/98
On the weekend before Christmas when the sale of books -- like most other consumer goods -- heats up, the area that was reaping the strongest sales activity was nonfiction. Hardcover nonfiction titles were outselling their fiction counterparts by almost three to one. In trade paperback, nonfiction outsold fiction by more than five to one. Not surprisingly, the five top-selling hardcovers for the holidays were Cold Mountain, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Joy of Cooking, Angela's Ashes and Simple Abundance. In trade paper, it was Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, Stephen King's Wizard &Glass and all the Chicken Soup books.
