And 'Cuba' Makes 35

No, not 35 trips for Pope John Paul, but 35 trips to press for Elmore Leonard, who has been called "the greatest living writer of crime fiction" (New York Times) and "the Dickens of Detroit" (Time). His latest, Cuba Libre, jumps from #13 to #7 in its second week on our list, and Delacorte reports that it has gone back for a second printing of 10,000 copies, making the in-print figure 100,000. Leonard kicked off his book tour January 16 at Borders Books in his home town, Birmingham, Mich., which celebrated by proclaiming "Elmore Leonard Day in the State of Michigan." He's also finishing a seven-city tour; appearances include Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and Charlie Rose. Reviews have been smashing-PW's starred review noted that readers "will race through [it] and then want to immediately re-read, slowly." Leonard is also enjoying a stellar run in Hollywood, with movies like Get Shorty and Jackie Brown (an adaptation of his 1991 novel Rum Punch). Film rights for Cuba Libre have been bought by Universal, with the Fargo team of J l and Ethan C n doing the adaptation.
