Ya Ya's Secret is Out
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 2/16/98
For several months now HarperPerennial's Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells has been a staple on West Coast bestseller lists. National bestsellerdom apparently has been helped by the formation of Ya-Ya groups nationwide, which have turned this title into a handselling phenom. First published in paper last May with an initial printing of 13,000, Harper now has 266,000 copies in print after 21 trips to press. The prequel, Little Altars Everywhere (HarperPerennial, 1996), has 86,500 copies in print after 17 printings. These numbers will surely be moving up, as movie rights for Divine Secrets were sold recently to Warner Brothers and Bette Midler's All-Girl Productions.
