Midnight's Power
Daisy Maryles, with Cindi Di Marzo -- 3/2/98
Random House is boasting that Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is the longest-running New York Times fiction or nonfiction hardcover bestseller of all time. That's true, up to a point. It's actually a question of semantics, since John Gray's Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus (HarperCollins) has been on the Times's list for a total of 227 weeks, vs. Midnight's impressive 190-week run. But Gray's book is on the "Advice, How-to and Miscellaneous" list. According to PW's records, Midnight will jump ahead of The Bridges of Madison County in one week and still has to beat Gray's record to become our longest-running hardcover bestseller. Still, all the stats associated with Midnight are impressive; it was first published in January 1994 with a 25,000-copy printing and is now up to 2.5 million copies after a remarkable 95 trips to press. The book has been published in more that 20 countries and since publication date, tourism in Savannah has increased by more than 46%.
