Imus Puts the Spin on 'Spin Cycle'
Daisy Maryles -- 3/23/98
Sometimes timing is everything. The Free Press originally had scheduled Spin Cycle: Inside the Clinton Propaganda Machine by Washington Post reporter Howard Kurtz for May, but as the Lewinsky scandal broke, it was pushed up to March 18. The original print run was 20,000, which shipped on February 24. Then Don Imus got hold of a finished book, loved it and talked about it every day for more than two weeks. Not surprisingly, demand accelerated and, based on skyrocketing orders, the publisher went back to print 11 times, bringing the total to 155,000 copies. Stories on the book ran in the newsweeklies, and the pub date moved up again, to March 11, when Nightline did its whole show on the book, followed by GMA, Extra, and Charlie Rose, plus a radio satellite tour with more than 60 top-tier bookings.
