Paterson, Ungerer Win Andersen Awards
-- 4/20/98
The 1998 Hans Christian Andersen Awards, announced April 2 at the Bologna Book Fair, went to American author Katherine Paterson and French artist Tomí Ungerer.
Paterson, who has written over 20 books for children, has received the Newbery Medal twice: in 1978 for Bridge to Terabitha and in 1981 for Jacob Have I Loved. She has also won a Newbery Honor and a National Book Award.

Ungerer's children's book career began in 1957, a year after he emigrated to the U.S. from his native France. Ungerer, who is known for his quirky sense of humor, bold art style and insight into the foibles of adults, has recently completed his first children's book in 25 years, Flix, published this spring by Roberts Rinehart.

The awards are given every two years to a living author and illustrator whose complete works have made an important contribution to children's literature. They are the highest international distinction given to creators of children's books.
