Roberts Named PEN Executive Dir.
-- 4/27/98
A seven-member search committee has selected Michael Roberts as the new executive director of PEN American Center. Roberts will start working in early summer.
Roberts, an attorney with a Ph.D. in English and American Literature, is secretary of Harvard University and assistant to its president, Neil Rudenstine. Roberts succeeds Karen Kennerly, PEN's executive director for 20 years, who is leaving to research and write a book on hate speech in 20th-century literature.

Kennerly said that Roberts is "the absolutely right person to fulfill the promise of PEN's newly designed programs."
