Hot Deals: Kamil's 'Ragtime'?
Judy Quinn -- 8/3/98
That's the spin Dial is giving to editorial director Susan Kamil's recent acquisition of City of Light, a first novel by Lauren Belfer set in turn-of-the-century Buffalo, N.Y., which at that time was a hub of wealth and political power, just as electrical power was to be switched on in that city. The main character is a girls' school headmistress with a dark secret; there are also plenty of walk-ons by real-life historical characters. Kamil acquired the book in a $450,000, North American, hard/soft rights preempt to ICM agent Lisa Bankoff, who at press time, had accepted a L80,000 preempt from U.K. publisher Hodder &Stoughton. A summer 1999 publication is planned.
