Hot Deals: Seven for Three by George
Judy Quinn -- 8/10/98
A deal reaching well into the next millennium for an author whose work dwells in the past has been signed by Pam Dorman, v-p and executive editor at Viking Penguin. It's a seven-figure world English hard/soft buy of the next three works of Margaret George, whose three previous upmarket historicals, on Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots and Cleopatra, have been strong sellers worldwide, racking up close to 1.5 million copies in print. The most recent of them, The Memoirs of Cleopatra (1997), will be a two-part ABC-TV miniseries to air next May. All three of the new books will focus on strong women in history, with the first, on Mary Magdalene, to be published in 2002. Dorman describes George as "the quintessential historical novelist." George was represented in the deal by agent Jacques de Sp lberch.
