Middlehurst Named CEO at DK
Jean Richardson -- 8/31/98
Peter Kindersley, current chairman and chief executive of Dorling Kindersley, has decided to step down as chief executive, in order, he said, to concentrate on the creative and innovative side of the business and on overall leadership.
He will be succeeded by James Middlehurst, former managing director of Britannia Music, the world's third largest mail-order distributor of CDs and videos, and an executive with a proven flair for sales and marketing. His brief is to "leverage the brand," and he is looking forward, he said, to helping DK fulfill its potential as a worldwide information and educational publisher. DK shares are currently at their lowest price this year, so Middlehurst faces a real challenge to restore confidence.

One immediate consequence of the change is that group managing director Rod Hare, who has been with the company for 11 years, has decided to leave. Hare denied that he had wanted the post of chief executive and said he was going because he felt he needed a change of direction.
