Hate Crimes Aimed at Cody's
Steven M. Zeitchik -- 8/31/98
Cody's, the Berkeley, Calif., bookseller, has recently become a victim of hate crimes. Vandals have defaced the store with graffiti, smashed windows and sent storeowner Andy Ross a postcard calling him a "cancerous Jew."
The attacks began about six months ago and have occurred as often as once a day, according to a store employee. Many of the attacks contain what Ross believes to be an anti-Semitic component.

To strike back, Ross held a rally in front of the store two weeks ago at which he said, "When all else fails, there is still the swastika and the broken glass in the night."

The motives for the attacks remain unclear, though some have speculated that wh ver is responsible was provoked by Ross's campaign against loitering near his store, which is located on a busy street corner.

This isn't the first time Cody's has had a security problem: bombs were found there in 1989, after the store continued to stock Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses.
