20th Anniversary NYIBC Adds Days, Space to Festival
-- 9/14/98
New York Is Book Country, the annual literary festival held September 23-27 along New York City's Fifth Avenue, is marking its 20th anniversary by adding two days to its citywide program of activities.
And also for the first time, the fair's activities will extend to Rockefeller Plaza, where free events such as a basketball clinic run by WNBA players and Barnes &Noble-sponsored readings in a coffeehouse atmosphere will take place.

Maurice Sendak, who created NYIBC's first poster in 1979 and its 10th-anniversary poster, has also created the 20th-anniversary commemorative poster. United Parcel Service, an NYIBC corporate sponsor (the New York Times is another), will provide special discounted overnight rates for book buyers who want to ship their day's purchases from the fair. The Internet will be the subject of two panel discussions focusing on children and marketing books. And NYIBC's website will sponsor "My Dinner With...," a contest in which entrants dream up a fantasy meal shared with a favorite character from a book.

The event will also include a panel discussion sponsored by PEN American Center, on "New York's Specialty Bookstores: Their Variety and Importance." The full calendar can be accessed at /nyisbookcountry.
