Crown Books Adds to Executive Team
-- 2/7/00

Crown Books has bolstered it's management team, appointing John Hatfield v-p and chief financial officer and John Bohman v-p and general merchandise manager. Both men will report to Crown president and CEO Charlie Cumello.

Hatfield joins Crown from the Center for Business Development, a Los Angeles management consulting firm. Hatfield has also worked as an executive with several different retailers, including Frederick's of Hollywood, May Company and Carter Hawley Hale. In addition to supervising the finance department, Hatfield will oversee the information systems, loss prevention and real estate departments.

Bohman most recently worked at Ingram Book Co., where he was v-p, sales, with responsibility for national, regional and independent sales, as well as the merchandising of general programs for bookstores and other retailers. Bohman also served as an adviser to Crown during its recent reorganization. He will be in charge of all merchandising functions for Crown.

Crown, which had not expected to open any new stores until the summer at the earliest, opened a new outlet February 5 in Mechanicsburg, Pa. The store is a former Encore outlet that was closed following the bankruptcy of Lauriat's, Encore's parent company. The store is 30,000 sq. ft., with 26,000 sq. ft. of selling space and the balance serving as a community room. The outlet carries about 200,000 book titles, plus a large selection of spoken-word audiocassettes and magazines, but no music. "This area is hungry for a bookstore," said Crown's Jeff Bartlett.
