The first three days, April 27-30, are reserved for the professionals and there is nothing second rate about this fair's organization. Politics are making the location more difficult, though. The "trade" dates line up with those of Argentina and Brazil fairs this year, so you can go to all three inside a two week span without leaving the continent. A variety of countries attend but the dominant presence is Central America, from Venezuela to Cuba to Costa Rica.

This event has superceded the Festival of Books in September as the place for major English language booksellers to do business in Singapore. It is primarily a book sale, in spite of attempts to make it into a trade fair for the region. However, in April 2000, an Asian Book Fair is being launched in Singapore to try again for a 'Frankfurt' for Asia.

They launched Hong Kong's first ICE, International Copyright Exchange in 1997 as part of the "trade only" days of the event, to help make Hong Kong the center for Chinese language rights deals, including those between Taiwan and the PRC, both of whom traditionally have large numbers of publishers present at this book fair. It is a good idea and some publishers in the PRC are working through their Hong Kong offices to get the rights deals they want. But whether Hong Kong can be as important as the Beijing and Taipei events remains to be seen.
