Marie Toulantis, chief financial officer at Barnes & Noble.com since April 1999, has been named to the newly created position of president and chief operating officer. Toulantis's promotion coincided with the departure of Carl Rosendorf, executive v-p, e-commerce, who is joining Boston-based SmartBargains.com as CEO.

As president, Toulantis will assume responsibility for merchandising, marketing, engineering and product development. She will continue to oversee BN.com's finance and other administrative functions, although the e-retailer has given company treasurer Kevin Frain an expanded role as v-p for finance. Before moving to BN.com, Toulantis had been CFO for Barnes & Noble Inc., which she joined in 1997 from Chase Manhattan Bank. She will continue to report to BN.com vice-chairman Steve Riggio.

Rosendorf had been associated with B&N on and off since 1988 when he joined B&N College Bookstores as a vice-president. In 1994 Rosendorf left B&N to help found the Internet cafe Cybersmith, but returned to take part in the launch of B&N.com in 1997 as v-p of marketing, sales and business development. Rosendorf, who lives in Weston, Mass., earned $315,385 in 2000 at B&N.com, while Toulantis had a salary of $350,000.
