Kids Sales Plunge in July

| Children's hardcover sales fell 68.4% in July compared to July 2000, when Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire made its record-setting debut. For the first seven months of the year, children's hardcover sales were down 45.4%. The Potter effect spilled over into the children's paperback category, where sales were off 13.2%; for the year-to-date, sales in the segment were down 8.7%. After a 22% sales gain in June, sales in the adult hardcover segment dropped 12.5% in July and were down 11.2% for the first seven months of the year. The trade paperback segment keeps slowly improving, with sales up 3.6% in July and 1.5% for the year to date. The elhi segment continues to be the industry's best performing segment with sales up by better than 19% for both July and the first seven months of 2001. | ||
