That would be Art Smith, author of the newest nonfiction bestseller, Back to the Table: The Reunion of Food and Family. As Oprah's personal chef and a contributing editor to her O magazine, Smith enjoys entrée to the book industry's indomitable plugger. He appeared on her show on October 24, enough time to heat up sales and land him in the #6 spot on our bestseller list this week. Hyperion has gone back to press twice, taking the in-print figure to 310,000. Back in April 1994, Oprah's then personal chef, Rosie Daley, wrote a cookbook, In the Kitchen with Rosie (Knopf). That went on to become a super bestseller, clocking 58 weeks on PW's weekly charts and ranking as the #1 bestseller for that year, with sales of more than 5.4 million copies. The book was also on the annual bestseller list a year later, in the #13 spot, with additional sales of almost 500,000 copies. Although Smith's book will do very well, with many more recipes than Rosie's title, it's unlikely Smith will achieve her numbers. Few books enjoy that bestseller rate; recent notable examples are Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom (Doubleday), which has sold more than 5.5 million copies, and the current bestseller The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkinson (Multnomah), about to exceed eight million copies sold in 2001 alone (see below). Okay, let's amend our Back to the Table prediction—perhaps with more Oprah appearances and some luck at longevity, Smith might achieve the bigger numbers.
