Rodale editor-in-chief Tami Booth made a substantial six-figure multimedia deal with Dr. Pamela Peeke, a widely recognized authority on women's nutrition and its relationship to resistance to stress. The deal calls for world rights to a book called The New Normal for Women , the writing of a monthly column for Prevention magazine, contributions to Prevention's Web site and other Rodale ventures. It was negotiated by Amanda Urban at ICM.... Counterpoint's Dawn Seferian preempted a first novel by poet-turned-prose writer Gerard Donovan. It's called Schopenhauer's Telescope and was bought, North American rights only, from agent Wendy Sherman; foreign rights in two countries have already been sold by Agnes Krup.... Colin Dickerson at Bloomsbury USA preempted Urban Tribes and the Never-Married , a study of those yuppies who seem to fight shy of commitment. It's by Ethan Watters, and was sold, world English rights, by Jay Mandel at William Morris.... Pocket's Louise Burke bought a companion book to the Sex and the City TV series on HBO from packager Charles Melcher of Melcher Media, who works with HBO Properties; the aim is to publish next fall, in hardcover and trade paper, in time for the Emmy-winning show's fifth season.
