Two Simon & Schuster imprints successfully land bestsellers on this week's nonfiction hardcover list. In the #9 spot is Holy War Inc.: Inside the Secret World of Osama bin Laden by journalist Peter L. Bergen (he is CNN's expert on terrorism). The Free Press had originally planned on publishing the book in July 2002, but current events made the publisher move up the pub date to November 13. The book has 275,000 copies in print after two trips to press and has been getting rave reviews. There was no dearth of media appearances, and Bergen has appeared on almost every TV channel in the last two weeks. Vanity Fair ran an excerpt in its December issue, which hit the stands November 7.

Landing in the 10th slot is Self Matters: Creating Your Life from the Inside Out by a regular on the national charts, Phillip C. McGraw. Simon & Schuster Source did a one-day laydown on November 13 and reports 700,000 copies in print. Print, radio, commuter, telephone and kiosk ads, scheduled for November and December, are just part of the book's marketing strategy. Oprah is scheduled to promote the book in January and McGraw will begin a five-city tour in February. A regular on Oprah, Dr. Phil, as he is known to his fans, will be launching his own national TV show in fall 2002, in partnership with Harpo Productions, Paramount Domestic Television and King World.
