As long as we are on the indie track, here's one more that is doing well in that market. The Onion: Dispatches from the Tenth Circle from Three Rivers Press, published September 4, had a strong first week with help from the readers of the Onion's weekly newspaper and Web site. One week later, the events of September 11 brought such satiric writings to a halt. By mid-October, Onion editors were back on late-night shows and conducted a 20-city morning-drive radio satellite tour to talk about the book and how they were ultimately able to find humor in tragic events. Dispatches has been reported by many independents and had a strong holiday season. There are 180,000 copies after three trips to press.
