First novelist Alice Sebold is making many in the book community happy, and the folks at Little, Brown are especially ecstatic. Her book, The Lovely Bones, makes it to the top of almost all the national charts in its fourth week, a feat accomplished by only a handful of debut novelists—that is, first novels that were not picked by Oprah or any of the newer on-air book club players. Its rise to the top within a month of publication date is meticulously detailed in this week's Book News . First printing was originally planned to be 35,000 and was quickly upped to 50,000. Just two weeks ago, in our July 15 Bestseller column, we reported 525,000 copies in print after eight printings; as Book News notes, there are now 925,000 copies after 11 trips to press. In-house support, an impressive bookseller campaign and first-rate reviews helped make the book. However, it was Anna Quindlen's recommendation on the Today Show's May 22 summer reading segment ("If you only read one book this summer, read The Lovely Bones") that propelled the book to the #1 spot on Amazon.com six weeks before pub date. This is just the beginning—many booksellers expect this book to do well through the winter holiday season.
