The 2003 Boston Globe—Horn Book Awards for Excellence in Children's Literature have been awarded, with prizes given in the categories of fiction and poetry, nonfiction and picture books.

The picture book award went to Big Momma Makes the World by Phyllis Root, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury (Candlewick). In fiction, the winner was The Jamie and Angus Stories by Anne Fine, illustrated by Penny Dale (Candlewick), and the nonfiction winner was Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey by Maira Kalman (Putnam).

Picture book honors were awarded to Dahlia by Barbara McClintock (FSG/ Foster) and Blues Journey by Walter Dean Myers, illustrated by Christopher Myers (Holiday House). Feed by M.T. Anderson (Candlewick) and Locomotion by Jacqueline Woodson (Putnam) won fiction honors.

Nonfiction honors went to To Fly: The Story of the Wright Brothers by Wendie C. Old, illustrated by Robert Andrew Parker (Clarion) and Revenge of the Whale: The True Story of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Phil-brick (Putnam).

The awards ceremony will be held at the Boston Athenaeum on Friday, October 3. They have been presented annually since 1967.
