Right below the nonfiction top 15 hardcovers on PW's chart is The Prince of Providence by Pulitzer Prize—winning journalist Mike Stanton. The titular prince is six-term Providence, R.I., mayor Buddy Cianci, who received a 64-month federal prison sentence for racketeering. The book has gotten rave reviews, boosting sales. The book was launched with about 13,000 copies, and quickly went back to press three times, bringing the total to 43,000 copies. Not surprisingly, many Rhode Island stores sold out their stock immediately. Random House v-p and editorial director Jonathan Karp believes that Cianci "transcends New England. He has raised political chicanery to an art form."
