The proposed memoir by former CIA director George Tenet, which has been making the rounds of publishers for several weeks, was won by Crown. Rick Horgan there made a bid estimated in the low seven figures for the untitled book, in which Tenet, who served under both Clinton and Bush, and had the second-longest run in the CIA's top spot at seven years, will describe his experiences there. Tenet never spoke much to the press, and the book is expected to offer much previously unavailable material about his efforts to restore the agency's competitive edge, its intelligence successes and failures, the problems presented by Iraq, the very different styles of the two administrations under which he served, and also Tenet's views on the agency's likely future. The book, bought for world rights and audio from Robert Barnett at Williams & Connolly, will be co-written with Bill Harlow, Tenet's spokesman and close colleague at the agency.
