RH, Rushdie Ink Multilanguage Deal
In an unusual deal, Random House will publish a new Salman Rushdie memoir in 2012 in multiple languages— English, German, and Spanish—for every territory where it has a subsidiary. The deal includes print, audio, and e-books and was negotiated by RH chairman Markus Dohle with agent Andrew Wylie.

Amazon Print, Digital Sales Rise
Amazon’s third-quarter revenue rose 38.7%, to $7.56 billion, while net income rose 16%, to $231 million. There were big gains in electronics (including the Kindle), where sales rose 68% overall and 80% in North America. Media sales were up 14% overall. Sales of digital and print books accelerated in the third quarter over the second.

B&N Separates Teen Genres
After testing the concept, Barnes & Noble has reorganized its teen sections by separating teen paranormal romance and teen fantasy and adventure from general teen fiction. B&N’s Mary Amicucci said teen fiction is the biggest book growth category at Barnes & Noble.

Sterling Debuts Teen Imprint
Sterling Children’s Books will launch a new teen fiction imprint in January, called Splinter. The list will debut January 11 with the release of Colleen Houck’s Tiger’s Curse (250,000 printing), the first in a fantasy-romance saga. All books will be released simultaneously in hardcover and e-book formats.

LibreDigital Starts SkyShelf
LibreDigital teamed with Starbucks and Yahoo! to launch its SkyShelf HTML5 Reader, a new wireless technology that will initially supply e-book content to the Starbucks Digital Network, a new entertainment service that will deliver e-books and other content to consumers in Starbucks stores via its Wi-Fi network. SkyShelf HTML5 technology will allow consumers to read e-books through the Web browsers of any device. LibreDigital plans to launch more SkyShelf partnerships by early November.

OverDrive Gets New Investors
Library e-content vendor OverDrive has received major new funding from Insight Venture Partners, a private equity firm. After regulatory approval, Insight managing directors Peter Sobiloff and Larry Handen will join OverDrive’s board.

Jon Meacham Hired by RH
A Random House author and former Newsweek editor, Jon Meacham has been named executive v-p and executive editor of Random House Publishing Group. He will report to RHPG president and publisher Gina Centrello, and will start at RH in early January, acquiring a select list of nonfiction titles.
