Look for Vincent Chen’s picture book debut, Hot Pot Night! about a Chinese-American child who brings his neighbors together to make a communal meal; the book includes a family recipe for hot pot.

The distributor is offering This Is How We Change the Ending by Vikki Wakefield (Text Publishing), a YA novel about 16-year-old Nate McKee, who is worried about a lot of things and is doing his best to be invisible.

On offer are two middle grade novels: Maya and the Rising Dark by Rena Barron, a fantasy about how 12-year-old Maya’s search for her missing father puts her in a battle between two worlds, and Winterborne Home for Vengeance and Valor by Ally Carter, about 12-year-old April, who has to keep a missing billionaire Gabriel Winterborne alive while solving the mystery of a missing heir and finding a secret key.

Featured novels are We Didn’t Ask for This by Adi Alsaid, about Central International School’s annual lock-in, during which a group of students stage an eco-protest and chain themselves to the doors, and Breath Like Water by Anna Jarzab, about champion swimmer Susannah Ramos, whose time has been slipping and her attempt to regain it.

On offer are Anna K: A Love Story by Jenny Lee (Flatiron), a debut YA novel offering a modern take on Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina; A Peculiar Peril by Jeff VanderMeer (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), making his YA debut with the first in a two-volume fantasy about a teenage boy who inherits his grandfather’s mansion with three strange doors; and TJ Klune’s YA debut, The Extraordinaries (Tor Teen), a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD.

Look for Rory Power’s sophomore YA novel, Burn Our Bodies Down (Delacorte), which, the publisher says, “showcases her stunning prose” along with tight plotting, and Lucy Knisley’s debut middle grade graphic novel, Stepping Stones (Random House Graphic), with a story from her own childhood that follows Jen’s move to a farm with her mother, her mother’s boyfriend, and his daughters.

Scholastic

Featured are two YA novels: The Loop by Ben Oliver (Chicken House), set inside a futuristic death row for teens under 18, and Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (Graphix), the first volume of a story about two boys becoming friends and falling in love.

Simon & Schuster

Available galleys include a YA novel that takes place over 24 hours, We Are the Wildcats by Siobhan Vivian, about a toxic high school coach and the girls on his field hockey team, and a picture book, Unicorns Are the Worst by Alex Willan, about Gilbert the goblin, who isn’t happy at first when unicorns move in next door. S&S is also giving out two middle grade novels—Girl and the Witch’s Garden by Erin Bowman, about a girl determined to infiltrate her grandmother’s enchanted garden, with a little help from her magical friends, and Blue Skies by Anne Bustard, the former co-owner of Toad Hall Children’s Bookstore, about a 10-year-old girl who needs a miracle to have her father return from WWII.

Sounds True

On offer is the first and only children’s story written by Eastern philosopher Alan Watts (1915–1973): The Fish Who Found the Sea, illus. by Khoa Le, a parable about a fish who spends all his time chasing his own tail.

Sourcebooks
