Publishing, and book publishers in particular, made it through 2020 in much better financial shape than most industry members thought would be the case when the pandemic struck last spring. With 2021 now well underway, a host of new imprints, rebranded imprints, fresh book lines, and new indie presses are looking to take advantage of the heightened interest in reading—and book buying.

One new imprint, Aconyte Books, is from a new entrant to book publishing. Formed by the game company Asmondee, Aconyte will publish science fiction and fantasy titles. It is being led by Marc Gascoigne, whose past book publishing credits include launching the Angry Robot imprint.

Broadleaf Books was started in January 2020 by Media 1517, and the Christian imprint is using the lessons learned from publishing amid a pandemic and a massive social justice movement to adjust its list. “We’ve reinforced our commitment to publishing books from thought leaders and emerging voices who bring fresh perspectives to essential topics,” says Alison Vandenberg, senior director of marketing and sales.

C&T Publishing is best known for its quilting, sewing, and crafting books. It first entered the fiction market in 2017, and it is bolstering its fiction list by adding new and backlist titles from cozy mystery writer Ann Hazelwood.

Charlesbridge is a well-known children’s publisher that started an adult imprint in 2010. Under editorial director Kevin Stevens, Imagine Books has undergone a makeover and is now publishing titles on what Charlesbridge calls timely, important, and progressive subjects.

Dundurn Press is one of Canada’s largest independent book publishers, and it has just unveiled a rebrand that establishes a new vision and logo for the imprint.

Imagine and Wonder, a New York publisher and distributor specializing in books on education, health, conservation, and social issues, is broadening its offerings through four new children’s book imprints: Bish Bash Books, Eurolina, Peter Pan Press, and Sir Rhymesalot.

Industry veteran Jeremy Nurnberg formed Little Genius Books last April and is gearing up to do 35–40 titles annually in such formats as board books, picture books, activity books, nonfiction, and novelty books.

In this special supplement, you can read more about what these companies’ new endeavors are offering. The supplement also includes a look at Quarto’s Cool Springs Press, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
